Team composition

Team. Cooperation. Goal. If every team was built on these three pillars, not only within C&C, this section would be much shorter. However, as this is not always the case, and we want it to be at least partly, the following parts are devoted to team composition, teamwork and this is all complemented by advice, experiences and theoretical skills of organizers, former coordinators and different team' members. 

Team members

1. A Delegate - a function that is supposed to represent your national interests. One or two delegates will have to take part in a total of three summits, while the composition of the delegation shall not be repeated.

Expectations:  Knowledge of the Rules of Procedure, interest in expressing themselves publicly, certain speaking skills, dialogue, quick reactions (summits have their length and so many things are discussed there, therefore you have to be able to keep up with the discussion).

Can help: Former experiences with debating and model simulations UN/EP, laptop (needed for writing documents during summits) 

Benefits: In addition to the negotiations, the summit also includes workshops and discussions, often with parliament members and experts. Furthermore, there is plenty of room for networking, entertainment and relaxation during the summit. Previous participants only praised them. 

2. Artist - It may seem that in a competition like C&C are needed only politically and diplomatic oriented students, but the opposite is true. The creation of the state also includes artistic matters that support the people of the country in their work. These include anthem, flag, and artistic skills that are also needed for history creation or optional tasks.

Expectations: Creation of a national anthem, flag, seal, the culture of the country, cooperation within the optional tasks.

Can help: The more creative soul the better. Former years were full of very beautiful anthems, flags, and cultures, which would not exist without creative souls. 

Benefits: Create & Control is a nationwide competition, which is noticed also by media. Even in this way, we believe artists can promote their work and we will only be thankful to them for that. 

3. Writer - this is an extremely important task in every team. International treaties are the most effective way to make relations in the competition. Competitors know to write them thanks to their basic education and organizers can find there everything needed. At the same time, they represent the elements that create the whole competition since the states begin without any international treaties.

Expectation: writing the treaties, agreements, implementations and other international documents, good grammar skills.

Can help: finesse, pragmatism, punctuality 

Benefits:  These documents are public for other teams and the general public. They reflect the nature and aspirations of the country and the higher their quality, the better the effectiveness of the countries in enforcing their objectives.

4. Policymakers - the team should be made up of people who will be participating in the policy-making for the whole duration of the competition and so will be able to form a stable government of their fictive country. It is fair to add that policymakers are those who should create the largest part of the team. The competition educates people in terms of state, but once again the interest in the topic could be decisive. 

Expectation: base knowledge of politics and functioning of public institutions, the interest in analyzing problems on the national and international levels of the C&C world and contributing to their solutions by critical thinking.

Can help: the interest in sectors related to state (law, ecology, defence... )

Benefits: Policymakers should be aware of the fact that it is they who create the state. Their ideas, most of the time the state really form and so they fulfil their idea.

5. Problem solver - if managing a state was a piece of cake, we would probably like to do it all. Unfortunately, even fictive management can not exist without problems. In Create&Control we recognize national and international problems while the national are dealt in teams and international are dealt during summits. These problems require a person/people. Regardless of the seriousness of the problem, it is crucial to got it as accurately as possible and to respond logically to it.

Expectations: problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and perseverance

Can help:  former experiences, skills in crisis management, a healthy dose of risk-taking

Benefits:  At the end of each problem stands the change. You will be behind this change, so you are the second after policymakers, whose ideas will change the state. On the other side, do not forget to cooperate with policymakers. 

6. Trendsman - We were thinking about this function a little longer. Its importance is as diverse as its use. Its role is to keep abreast of the times, to follow the world news and to capture events, especially in the European Union.  For what? C&C will also be connected to the real world, evaluated by people from the real world, often people involved in this news.

Expectations: checking of latest events, an overview of the world of politics

Can help: natural interest, subscriptions of news

Benefits: No person could not profit from the latest information. Also, if a team keeps up with trends, this may be reflected in its decisions.

7. Deputy coordinator  - a brand new, fully official function, whose role is to be the so-called right hand of a coordinator. We expect this function to balance several things, especially the coordinator's impact and consistent communication with the coordinators. We will have higher expectations from their representatives than other team members, but they will be properly rewarded at the end of the year.

Expectations: Communication with organizers, manage deadlines,  team member' s representative to the coordinator

Can help: previous experiences with work in a team, observation

Benefits: Unlike the coordinator, this function should be elected by the team, which gives it more importance. The coordinator deputy also has a unique opportunity to communicate with the organizers and thus increase the level of the team.

Tips and tricks

We finished the last year of C&C with a questionnaire which was supposed to tell us as much as possible about teams, their satisfaction with the competition and help us with improvements. It was the teams that we discovered quite interesting things about, and we will write about them in the next few lines and also will add some of our tips. 

Communication.  The last year showed us two things. 

The first one is that all teams communicated and used different social media platforms. Usually it was Facebook, but some teams added tools like Google Keep, Evernote or Todoist to work together and assign tasks. Since all the previous teams which used such platforms were usually more successful in their work, we would like to encourage also new teams in managing their work this way.

The second thing was the frequency of their meetings. One third did it every week,  second third every month and one third only when they needed to work on something. This year will be different (as they always say). There will be many more activities between Žilina summits and so it will be much more important to find the ideal rhythm. It helped some teams to meet before school, others used to meet after school, some of them used to go for a coffee to the city or (non-) alcoholic beer, so they stay motivated also this way. We also support next year's teams in this, it is definitely not just about work, but also about fun. 

Functioning. We already mentioned the possible team structure we recommend. But it is not a rule or a duty. But we know, as well as the experts whose books cost us money that one feels better when they know what their function or role in a team is and the best way is to agree on that within a team. So if you believe that these functions are not what you are looking for-  do not use them, but create a system. You will thank yourselves later!

Motivation. Often the most difficult to find, but this should not be the case in C&C. We have a sophisticated system of motivational and coercive means.
The second may sound violent, but we usually don't have reason to use them frequently. Those first are awesome. From material prizes through interesting tasks of both compulsory and optional nature to the most important - a great group of people.  Not everyone will see everyone, but only within teams are created strong and friendly connections. What's more, we, organizers are always available to help you, to find a new motivation or to solve problems. After all, we are all peers and willing to help!
